May 21, 2025

International automakers nearly 80 autoworkers to Capitol Hill to highlight the growth of the industry, push back against auto tariffs

WASHINGTON, D.C.Autos Drive America today hosted its second Congressional “Drive-In,” bringing together nearly 80 employees from international automakers across the United States to Capitol Hill.

This event highlights the significant role international automakers have on the U.S. economy, manufacturing nearly half of all cars in the United States – nearly half a million more than the

Detroit-3. The participants discussed the impact tariffs have on the entire U.S. auto industry with lawmakers, and also sought support for key tax provisions in the House reconciliation bill that would keep the U.S. automotive sector competitive.  The group also promoted the benefit of workforce development programs that prepare America’s manufacturing workforce for 21st century careers.

“We are honored to bring together employees from international automakers to share their stories and contributions with lawmakers,” said Jennifer Safavian, President and CEO of Autos Drive America. “Their presence on Capitol Hill today reflects the profound impact our members have on the U.S. economy, workforce, and communities. As we navigate the complexities of global trade, it’s imperative that we advocate for policies that ensure international automakers can continue to invest, innovate, and provide high-quality jobs across America.”

The theme, “Investing in US,” highlights the substantial investments international automakers have made in the United States. To date, these companies have invested $109 billion into U.S. operations, supporting over 2.4 million American jobs. In 2023 alone, international automakers produced 4.9 million vehicles, accounting for 48% of all U.S. light vehicle production. International automakers exported 762,000 U.S.-built vehicles to more than 130 countries and territories in 2023. With 500 facilities across 36 states, including 31 manufacturing facilities in 12 states and 76 R&D facilities in 15 states, international automakers are deeply integrated into the fabric of American manufacturing and innovation.

In addition to highlighting economic contributions, the Drive-In comes at a critical time for U.S. trade policy. Autos Drive America supports efforts that provide relief from harmful tariffs and urges policymakers to take further action to create a pro-growth environment for international automakers. Reducing trade barriers will help strengthen U.S. manufacturing, support American jobs, and keep the industry globally competitive.

“Our members have been investing in the U.S. for more than 60 years, supporting millions of jobs,” added Safavian. “That level of commitment is helping drive growth, strengthen communities, and keep America competitive.”
