Built for American families: Volkswagen celebrates one million Atlas family SUVs assembled in Chattanooga

April 21, 2026

Volkswagen of America today announced the production of the one millionth Atlas family SUV at its Chattanooga assembly plant, a proud milestone for the brand’s U.S. operations, driven by strong demand from American families. Since start of production in 2016, Atlas has become a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s U.S. portfolio. Together with Atlas Cross Sport, in production since 2019, it has defined the brand’s strategy in one of the world’s most competitive SUV markets.

From the outset, the seven-seat Atlas was engineered for the realities of American driving—from long road trips and carpools to weekend getaways—offering a spacious three-row layout, flexible cargo solutions, and comfort-focused features. Today the Atlas family ranks among Volkswagen’s top-selling nameplates in the United States and leaders in the midsize SUV segment, with over 100,000 models sold in 2025.  Nearly one in every three Volkswagen vehicles sold in the U.S. is an Atlas or Atlas Cross Sport, with production split approximately 74 percent three-row Atlas and 26 percent Atlas Cross Sport to date.
