Autos Drive America Supports Legislation That Reinstates Congressional Authority Over Trade

October 5, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C.Jennifer Safavian, President and CEO of Autos Drive America today released the following statement in support of the Bicameral Congressional Trade Authority Act of 2021 introduced by Senators’ Toomey and Warner, cosponsored by 16 bipartisan senators, to require Congressional approval prior to the imposition of tariffs or other restrictions on imports for national security reasons.

“Steel and aluminum tariffs continue to harm automakers during a time of limited supply and rising prices. The 2018 initiation of a Section 232 investigation on automobiles and automobile parts demonstrated the need for such congressional oversight. This statute, written at the height of the cold war, needs an update.  We encourage Congress and the President to work together on policies that will ensure the U.S. auto industry remains strong, competitive, and innovative. The future growth and prosperity of our industry and the American jobs it generates depend on it.”
